method of expression and cultural production”. As Richard says: “We also
encourage our students to explore provocative and alternative methods

Neon signs could be the norm for Middlebury businesses

BY MATTHEW O'ROURKE REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
MIDDLEBURY — Sandwich boards, flags and even neon-style "Open" signs might be allowed at local businesses soon without a special exception from the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Those relaxations of the town's strict sign rules are being considered by the commission as part of an overhaul of the town's zoning regulations. The review follows the approval of a backlit open sign for Bicycle Works in the Middlebury Hamlet plaza.

Matt Morris, the shop's owner, had hung the sign in his window but removed it after he received a letter in July 2008 stating that he was in violation of the town's regulations. Morris claimed that removing the sign cost him a $12,000 revenue loss.

The town's regulations prohibit business owners from using illuminated neon or neon-like signs in their windows without getting a special exception.

The Exhibitionist: Neon at Felix Kulpa

Neon is one of those noble gases that hangs out looking sexy and drinking cocktails around Group 18 of the periodic table while the other gases sweat in the kitchen, cooking. Representing the fantasy-inducing family of neon, argon, xenon, krypton and helium gas, each with its distinct qualities and color, “neon” is usually captured in glass tubes that have been bent into artful shapes, then stimulated by currents of electricity until it glows.

NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) — It seems everything is up in the air when it comes to the North Bend welcome sign — except for the sign itself.

Just before Thanksgiving, a crew removed the deteriorating sign from the entrance to North Bend, where it had straddled U.S. Highway 101 for more than 70 years.
