Neon. Suddenly it’s everywhere in pop culture, in movies, TV, and music.
This is most obvious in movie trailers, where neon has become almost
standard.
So why all the neon now? The most obvious influence, as we noted in reference to those Girls titles, is designer Tom Kan’s assaultive, unforgettable opening title sequence for Enter the Void (2009). Many though not all of these title sequences—including in Girls, the “All of the Lights” video, and the trailer for Only God Forgives—are paying clear homage to Enter the Void, making their neon signs blink and strobe, often in different languages and typefaces, just like in that film. Spring Breakers has another, more direct connection to Enter the Void: To achieve its distinctive look, director Harmony Korine hired Enter the Void’s cinematographer, BenoĆ®t Debie.

Heaven & Hell In Neon: Chris Bracey @ Scream
The space between the stars was a successful and highly popular group show, so it’s no surprise that one of the featured artists is getting his own solo show at Scream London.
Chris Bracey works in eye-catching neon to create bold works filled with energy. Neon is not a new medium for Bracey or his family — his father created lights for carnivals and amusement parks. The artist himself started off creating signs for Soho bars, clubs and tattoo parlours before moving into set design in the film industry. This transition opened up a natural move into commercial art, which has proven to be a successful segue.
This latest exhibition has a religious slant to it but is also autobiographical, charting his rise from humble beginnings of designing signs to becoming a fully fledged commercial artist. The mix of religious iconography and neon should make for some powerful imagery and radical contrasts.
There’s no doubt that his work will divide people between those who find it garish and over the top, to those who revel in the infectious energy. But we’re looking forward to his latest works and once open it’ll be hard to walk past the gallery without being drawn in by the alluring lights.

Biennial neon exhibition lights up the night

Light makes art possible: the interplay of shadow and saturation, a dull matte finish or a brilliant glow from inside. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the country's oldest university glass program finds ways to illuminate and refract light in thousands of different ways.
UW-Madison has often hosted luminous displays of sculpture by artists from across the country, all using the medium of light. This year, the invitational 2013 Biennial Neon and Light Exhibition will take place from 6-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20. Held at the indoor Stock Pavilion, 1675 Linden Drive, the exhibit is lit only by the art itself.
